I have been working with clay for more than 20 years and never tire of its versatility and diversity. Because of this my work can sometimes be extremely varied in method of making and appearance. My work does, however, tend to fall roughly into four main categories.
Thrown bowls and platters create a large surface area on which I can experiment with colourful slips and glazes.
Smooth, burnished, pit-fired and raku-fired pieces give a stark contrast between the discipline of accurate and labour intensive making, with the element of excitement and unpredictability in the firing, as every piece is unique.
The burnished pieces also contrast well with the rough textured and impressed planters and vessels. These are inspired by an interest in rock formations, coastlines and plant life. Plant material is impressed into the clay surface when wet, which then take on a ‘fossil-like’ appearance when glazed.
The sculptural pieces range from birds, torsos and figures to 'jungle' scenes.
